Make your LinkedIn Profile stand out from the crowd

LinkedIn has been around for about 15 years now and it remains as important as ever for job seekers and employers.

But despite its importance in a competitive jobs market, many people are missing out on making their profiles stand out from the crowd. If this sounds like you, don’t worry – there are a few easy ways to make sure your LinkedIn doesn’t get lost among thousands of profiles.

Have a good profile picture

A good headshot is possibly the most obvious way of making your profile look more professional, but it is something that many people overlook. It puts a face to the CV and potential employers are much more likely to engage in your profile if you have a professional photograph to accompany your CV and summary. Everyone knows that first impressions count – so upload the perfect picture and add a bit of life to your profile.

Craft an amazing headline

Following on from ‘first impressions count’ – so do second impressions. That’s why having an eye-catching heading is as important as having a decent headshot.

You have 120 characters to work with here, so show off. Instead of ‘journalist’, why not go for

Broadcast journalist and talk-show host, bringing the news that matters to people into their front room.

And voilà, you’ve just told them who and what you are about.

Have a good summary

Having a well-written summary will set you ahead of much of the crowd. While listing your relevant experience is crucial, employers don’t just want to hear about your experience.  They also want to hear about what you can do for them. So give them a reason to contact you – keep it short and sweet, add keywords and buzzwords connected to your field, and you’ll be sure to blow that prospective employer away.

Add a cover photo and use visual media

Just like on Twitter and Facebook, you can add a cover photo to your LinkedIn profile. It’s really easy to do and it makes such a difference to the feel of your profile. So choose something that says something about your profession or your personality, and with the click of a button, you will add so much flair to your profile.

You can also connect other media to your profile like Youtube videos. This is a great opportunity to be creative and make your page leap off the screen and demand the attention of a potential employer.

Customise your URL

Your LinkedIn URL is the web address for your profile.

The default URL will have your name, of course, but it will also have a bunch of random numbers in it.

So why not take the opportunity to customise it, turning it into something much more relevant? On the right-hand side of your profile, there is the option to edit your public URL. Click on that to make your URL more relevant. Like having a good headshot, it is simple and quick, and it makes your profile so much more clean cut and neat.
